Wedding Registry

We’ve decided to do our registry through I Do Foundation, so that people can make donations in our honor or have a portion of the proceeds of any gifts we receive go to the nonprofit organizations that we’ve selected.

Just to clear up any confusion, we did originally register at Bed Bath & Beyond before we discovered this site. Though it was kind of fun walking around with the registry scanner device thingy — and many, many thanks to family and friends for the wonderful gifts we received at our pre-wedding events — we’ve now transferred most of the remainder of the items we’d registered for there to our new registries. (For the record, there are still a few things we left on there that we couldn’t find on the I Do Foundation’s participating sites.)

Here’s how you can access our new registries or make a donation in our honor:

If you’d like to make your gift to us in the form of a donation in our honor: Please click here. On that page, click on the button marked “Make a Donation Now.” You’ll be taken to a page where you can fill out basic personal information, and then you’ll be taken to a page where you’ll see a list of six organizations that are meaningful to us (descriptions are below). You can donate to one or a combination of two or more (if you select a combination your donation will be split evenly among them).

If you would like to give us a gift from one of the registries we’ve chosen: Please click here. On that page, click on the button marked “View Couple’s Selected Stores.” You’ll then be taken to a page where you can click buttons to go to one of the online stores where we’ve set up registries (right now we’ve got registries going with Amazon and Cooking.com). Once you get to either Amazon or Cooking.com, you’ll have to enter one of our names to get to our registry on that site. If you get us something from one of those stores (thanks so much, by the way!), a portion of your purchase price (4% from Amazon; 8% from Cooking.com) goes to our nonprofits. Note: It's important to go to the I Do Foundation site first; otherwise, the donations won’t get made.

These are the nonprofits we chose:

Impact Theatre
Impact is a Berkeley-based company that is dedicated to producing new works for audiences that are typically more interested in media other than live theatre. Cheshire has been involved with the company for more than three years, doing all the posters and other graphic work, along with occasionally writing short pieces for them and even managing the box office on occasion. Sarah’s an honorary member. It’s an extremely low-budget company that stretches its resources to the limit. Any help is dearly appreciated.

Literacyworks
Literacyworks is the nonprofit at which Cheshire makes his living as the art director. The organization develops free, top-quality multimedia educational materials, adaptable for ethnically and culturally diverse learners and for multiple learning styles. Literacyworks delivers these materials through the Internet, CDs and video to literacy and education organizations, including library, community-based, and public adult and family education and literacy programs. Adult literacy is a vital need in our society, and it’s been mostly ignored in favor of “leaving no child behind.” We’re trying to make sure no adults are left behind, either.

Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch is dedicated to defending human rights and protecting the freedoms of individuals in every corner of the world. Mobilizing its experienced staff of regional experts, lawyers, and journalists, Human Rights Watch stands with victims and activists to bring offenders to justice, to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, and to protect people from inhumane conditions in wartime. Its hard-earned reputation as a leading human rights defender reflects the organization’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to a broad spectrum of human rights concerns, from discrimination to genocide.

Lambda Legal
Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, the transgendered, and people with HIV or AIDS through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. They're prominent among the organizations fighting for the right for same-sex couples to have their marriages legally recognized just like ours will be.

EarthRights International
EarthRights International's mission is to protect humans and their natural environment from abuses occurring in the name of development. ERI combines the power of law and the power of people in defense of human rights and the environment, our earth rights.

Share Our Strength
Share Our Strength works to end hunger and poverty in the United States and abroad by mobilizing individuals and industries and creating community wealth to promote lasting change. Since its founding in 1984, Share Our Strength has raised over $163 million to support organizations providing emergency food as well as programs working to help low-income individuals manage their own resources, such as nutrition education classes that teach food budgeting and healthy cooking. Share Our Strength supports efforts to enroll more low-income children and families in federal nutrition programs, including School Breakfast and Food Stamps, and funds organizations that build community gardens and operate inner city farmers markets.
